Jazz — everything about you is inspiring, from your smile to the way that you live your life to your compassion for others and your willingness to share your story with others. I was so touched by your story and the deep bonds of love that you share with your family. Everyone has different struggles in life but it’s how you handle them that counts and makes you who you are. You are a beautiful and talented young woman — I was so impressed with your soccer abilities and the fact that you make your own mermaid costumes! — and your amazing spirit shines through. Your parents and siblings are also wonderful and full of love. :-)

  10. Leslie says:

    hey jazz and family,
just wanted to let you know (as I’m sure many others do as well) that your story is truly amazing and has touched my heart. It’s not often you see or hear of parents as open and understanding as you are, and siblings that are so awesome. Jazz you are already and will continue to be an inspiration for not only transgenders but I believe for everyone….your sincerity is beautiful, or heart is felt from even over the computer (which is where I learned of your story)…thanks for warming my heart. You guys are amazing!!!!!
    Lelise

  13. Caleb Lee Potts says:

I love Jazz! I soooo want to be friends with her.

  14. dino says:

First off you do not look beautiful or look normal , you are very beautiful , and you are very normal . Sadly society loves to label and seperate everything from things as little as socks and underwear to huge issues such as gender and race. Your a beautiful girl and just because someone agrees with me or disagree you should never doubt your beautiful. There are a lot of people in this world and they’re all entitled to their own beliefs and thoughts and opinions but many do it in a disrespectful mean and evil manner . Never let them put you down because where 1 person may not find you beautiful or are so hateful towards you , there are 20 more who will find you beautiful and will love you for everything you have to give.

  15. Paul Gerson says:

Hello, I just wanted to say that Jazz is a beautiful kid and your family inspires me. I was fortunate enough to see and record the “My Secret Self” episode of 20/20 when I was in high school and it has helped me more than you know. Thank you,
    Paul

  16. just call me kitty says:

I’d have to agree with Caleb Lee.
It may be a strange comment but the fact remains true: you have become a stronger girl and will be an even stronger woman because of the trials you have been put through.
the trials are there, sadly they remain, but you have helped take a huge chunk out of them for others to come.
Be proud and always hold you head high!

  17. Alisha says:

Thank you for sharing your story, Jazz. It’s an inspiration to all of us older folks within the LGBT community.

My husband and I are friends with and have dated trans women who did not have the choice to transition in their youth, because society was not progressive enough back then. They have faced difficult journeys as they transitioned in adulthood. We are both so happy for you that you have loving, supportive parents, and live in a society that recognizes how critical it is to access counseling, medical care, and other support services from an early age.

In sharing your story and your lovely artwork, you have done more for the LGBT community in your young life than many of my peers who are three times your age. We hope you will continue to speak, inspire, dream, and above all, be Jazz!

  18. Shannon says:

Hey Jazz, You are an inspiration to everyone. I wish i could meet you because i would be meeting one of my idols. I am a bisexual teen who remains in the closet not because my family would regect me but those around me give me enough already, i don’t want to take any more. You are such an inspiration to LGBT kid’s and teens everywhere. You are so happy and full of life, keep fighting on Jazz and be proud to be LGBT it’s who we are and no one can stop us!!

      1. Jeanette says:

        Hi,

I can understand why you feel afraid and alone. If you don’t feel comfortable speaking to your parents…. Do you have a family member, teacher, or guidance counselor that you feel could be supportive. If not there is a wonderful organization, that you can call for help. They have trained professionals that can give you advice. They are amazing. Here is the website: http://www.thetrevorproject.org Call the telephone number on the right side of the page. I am a therapist in New York (http://www.mytherapist.info) who specializes in gender and I also teach in the Psych department at Hunter College in NYC. I show the Barbara Walters special on transgender kids and the OWN documentary to my classes each semester, and just wanted to say how great it is that people come out and share their stories, even though sometimes it seems like people won’t understand.

    1. Jeanette says:

      Hi,

Thanks so much for sharing our story to help your students understand transgender children. In addition, our family recently filmed an update to our 2007 20/20 Special with Barbara Walters. The segment will air this Friday, 11/2/12 at 10pm on ABC. We are very excited for this opportunity to open hearts and minds so that transgender children can be embraced by our society. Please spread the word. Thanks!
Jeanette, Greg, Ari, Sander, Griffen, and Jazz

  21. Donna says:

Such an ispiring kid and inspiring family… I don’t know any trangendered people and haven’t ever known much about it but I stumbled across the “I am Jazz” documentary and was so touched by Jazz’s story and how incredibly loving and supportive her family is. It’s so great that trans people are gaining more visibility and acceptance, and hopefully Jazz’s story, and the other wonderful stories of happy transkids and their amazing families will help eliminate some of the ignorance out there. The world would be boring if we were all the same! These children deserve to be themselves and to be loved and embraced by society.

  22. Donna says:

Also, I missed out on the new 20/20 special… is it on the internet anywhere or will it be re-airing at any point? I’d really like to see it.

    1. Jeanette says:

      Hi,
Thank you so much for your beautiful and supportive post. The new 20/20 Special will be airing on 12/14/12 on ABC. :)

  25. edward says:

what joy you have brought to this world, a wonderful gift you bring a beautiful girl tho she was not what you expected, open arms you accepted, you showed love and care and fought for her to make things fair, many kids wish to have a family like this i know i do, for you gave birth to a daughter so pure and so true, words cant exspress how helpful yal been to us, you showed me there can be happy family no fights no fuss, and to jazz never lose your way , for you are like the moon at night and the sun in the day, you make this world better too see, and make living better for kids like me, i always had a mom but no dad, your life is like a fairy tale i wish i had, dont be in a rush to grow so fast, make every moment with your family last, your the inspiration that me and the world need, for everything great in this world comes from just one seed

  26. Michael says:

Doesn’t matter if you’re 7, or 70. Just find what you need to be happy and go with it.

  27. Takeya Oliver says:

Jazz you are a great inspiration i know a girl ( biologically a boy) who came out of the shadows because of your story. You are truely a gift that God made one of his special creations in fact. You have a great family to support you too. You are doing the right thing and always follow what you believe in. Also I heard you like mermaids so Im making some doll mermaid tails for Trans kids. THANK YOU !!

  28. Dee dee Chud says:

    Jazz.

Your story has touched me. I just want you to know you are so precious and beautiful inside and out. Your soul and spirit inspire me. With all that you have had to endure thus far in your life. I’m truly sorry you would even have to go through all this. It all makes us stronger sweetie.

I will pray for you always. May God bless you, your family in life and quest to share your story. May your story open peoples minds everywhere, also helping transgender kids in there lives. I hope all can be as confidant, happy, strong as you….

I must also say how inspiring your parents are to me as well. I’m a firm believer in fighting for what is right and you did it girl…Yeah! ;-)
I’m so happy to hear that you have been able to change the rules in the sport of soccer for all transgender kids.

Keep on sharing and rocking your beautiful self girlie. I’m wishing you…the most beautiful life for you all. Keep pushing and reaching for it all. You are not alone.
Big hugs and much love and support.

    Jazz,
I stumbled across your documentary this afternoon, and I just wanted to say what an incredible and inspiring young woman you are. You are so articulate and well spoken, and your intelligence, maturity, and enthusiasm just light up the screen. You know when you see someone who just has that ‘it’ factor? Well, I saw that in you today, and it really is something special. I wish you many years of happiness and success. You truly are an inspiration.
    - Maddie

  35. Sam says:

Jazz is amazing and I wish I could meet her, I am so happy for you guys!

    1. Matt says:

      I’m with you, Sam. :)

  36. Matt says:

I am so glad to hear that Jazz’s girl friends accepted her for who she is. If I ever had a kid, and for some reason that he or she wants to change his or her gender, I won’t disapprove. Jazz is too good for a boy. She deserves all the success.
Will she have surgery? Or possibly go back to the other stage? Who knows?
Not ALL boys will be boys, and not ALL girls will be girls. Those who have contributed are right. Jazz is amazing.
I support jazz and wish her the very best.
Good luck. Hope to see you again soon on TV and see what happens.

  37. Janet Sullivan says:

Thank you for being you, Jazz. You’ve inspired me to come back out of the closet as a transgendered person after about 8 years of “stealth mode” where I stopped telling people about that part of my past. When I transitioned at 20 I was one of the “young ones”. Now look at you! I can’t tell you how proud I am of you and all the other transkids out there. I knew something was wrong as early as kindergarten, and my mom says I was scolded for using the girl’s bathroom in preschool, so I totally believe that you and the other kids knew at early ages. That you are allowed to be your true selves so early is truly a miracle, as are all of you and your families.

  38. Josh says:

You guys are awesome. You have supported your daughter endlessly. I truly admire your family.

  39. patrick says:

    Dear Jazz,
I know we will probably never meet, but i just want you to know that you are easily the bravest, most inspiring person to me personally. Im in high school and i know what it feels like to be made fun of, but i can only imagine what you must go through. You inspire me to be proud of who i am, because being unique is GOOD!! It makes you different and better than everyone else!
Thats all. It would probably be the best day of my life if we could ever meet face to face…Youre my hero Jazz. It would make my life if you responded… :)
    ~patrick

  41. EJ says:

Hi, I am such a huge fan of Jazz. The way she thinks bout guys when it came to dating, if they can not exsept her the way she is very inspiring. I am 22 year old young lady. I am not transgender, I was apart of GSA in HS. We also had people if they wanted to join in the club that could be transgender. I want to lear more from Jazz. Its just so interesting bout the situation, i always love to learn more new things. like: how are the meds working if she is on them, does she feel sick? ect… Jazz please keep that head held high you are such an insperation to a lot of people. I even look up to you cause of the challanges you have faced/face. I hope maybe one day I would run into you just to say hi and how much you are an amazing girl.
